A Brief History of In the Wind
In the summer of 2006, Cameron Goble approached Eric Whitmore with the idea of making a micro-budget feature film. After coming off of the Duke City Shootout and Nowhere Street, it seemed to Cameron that it was time to take the reins.
The movie had to fit into very specific parameters: it had to take place in one location, have a small cast, and few visual effects. It had to emphasize characters over action. Cameron know that Eric had his ear to the ground in the Albuquerque media scene, and was confident that Eric could turn up someone with a suitable script.
A few days later, Eric asked Cameron if he would be interested in reading a script he had written a few years ago for a theatrical performance.
That script was In the Wind, Eric’s first foray from comedy into drama. The play premiered in 2003 at the Tricklock Performance Space as part of the annual Words Afire festival. Reviews of the event appeared in the Daily Lobo and the Weekly Alibi.
Cameron and Eric have worked doggedly to re-mold the script into a powerful experience for the big screen. The emphasis on character and mood remains the most important focus.
In February of 2007, the first script reading was held in the Media Arts department of the University of New Mexico. Eric and Cameron brought in talented performers, technical professionals, and burgeoning screenwriters, all to read parts and offer critique. The response was very favorable, and the script was considered to be ready for development.
Among the readers was Sabina Zuniga-Varela, whom Eric and Cameron had considered for the role of director well before the reading. Her enthusiasm and creative framing of the story confirmed the vision of the movie, and when offered, she enthusiastically came on board.
In the Wind — the movie — entered pre-production with Mrs. Varela on board. Work has proceeded to secure audition space and advertise the movie in preparation for the fall of 2007. Rehearsals began in September as the crew is gathered and locations were secured.
Shooting took place in October and lasted four weeks. The film is now in post-production under the capable eyes of John Lore’s editing prowess. As of July 2009 all footage has been cataloged and captured, and scenes are coming together off the script.
