Auditions: The Aftermath

Posted in Diaries by Cameron Goble

Although we ran our last audition four days ago, it’s taken me that long to crawl out of my foxhole and adjust my eyes to the light of day.

Holy cow! What a ride!

The more I talk to folks about this process of making a movie, the more amazed I am at the response we’re getting. A certain somebody recently told me over lunch that, for a film he worked on last summer, almost exactly as many people turned out for auditions as there were roles to fill.

Our humble endeavor landed over sixty tryouts, and we only have five parts. That gives us a nice, big pool from which to pick, and in some cases, that choice will be tough, tough, tough. I can’t speak for Sabina, by my eyes are still smoking from some of the fireball performances I was privileged to witness.

And most of those are cold readings, folks. As in, “just saw the script for the first time five minutes ago.” The ones who prepared, oh yeah, it made a difference. But there were plenty of talented people who walked through that door ready to give everything they had to something they’d only just read about.

So this week, we’re cooling our heels, relatively speaking. Sabina’s got Still Life to put on and kids to teach. Me? Oh, I’m just lazy. (And producing Dice Make Bonk. And working on web pages. And prepping the audition footage to review next week. And working the day job. And catching up on two weeks’ backlog of life. You know the drill.)
