Lesson #1: Check Everything.

Posted in Diaries by Cameron Goble

You may have heard that we’re holding auditions soon. Here’s a little story about that.

Sabina took the initiative last week and wrangled together some excellent fliers, complete with those dangley chad-things on the bottom that you tear away from phone numbers. You see them all over the place, especially in college towns.

Ours, of course, has to stand out.

And it does!  It’s a damn cool flier. Sabina made a great choice for the graphic: check out The End of the World.

(And hey! What’s the name of the artist at the bottom, there? I call that a good omen.)

So I pick up the flier from her on Tuesday so I can make copies. I run to the copy shop, run off a bunch, chop the chad-things up and attach them to the bottom, and distribute a chunk back to Sabina. Some go to Eric, some I keep for myself. In this way, we shall surely cover Albuquerque and ferret out the amazing talent creeping around therein.

After all that, I realized: The dates on the chad-things were wrong.

I’m in charge, so, my fault. I can’t afford to run off more copies, so I’m stuck correcting them by hand. Over 200 little paper things. Yay. No big deal, but certainly something to learn from.

So this is the lesson: Check Everything. Even if it looks right the third time.

I will triple-check every little goddamned thing before I shell out one more penny on something, because I have no budget, and the only mistakes I can afford are the ones I could not have done anything about to begin with.
